Tree dedication in Memory of:

Mary Richard, Former Director Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary

The Garden City Bird Sanctuary, Inc. was established as a private nonprofit organization in 1995 to manage the award winning and innovative community nature preserve established through the Garden City Environmental Advisory Board with assistance from the local chapter of the National Audubon Society – the South Shore Audubon Society, the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and the cooperation and support by the Nassau County Department of Public Works. This 9-acre storm water basin was the first “dual use” pilot by Nassau County to permit public access and use of “sump” properties while maintaining their intended function to drain roads and replenish the groundwater aquifers. During the last 15 years, over 10,000 visitors and volunteers have provided over $350,000 in volunteer community services and donations to help maintain and improve this ecosystem which includes a remnant of the original Hempstead Plains. We invite all our contributors and sponsors to assist us in ensuring this program continues to benefit both this site and other community efforts. Benefactors will be recognized in our publications, on our website at www.gcbirdsanctuary.org, and on information boards at the sanctuary. Join the Garden City Bird Sanctuary!
