WINTER- 2009/2010 Facebook Groups: “Garden City Bird Sanctuary” ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 6th GRADE ENVIRONMENTAL ESSAY CONTEST
The Garden City Bird Sanctuary has sponsored successful essay contests for 6th graders since 2006, and we are continuing this program with the Garden City Middle School. Students may choose any environmentally related topic for their essay. Essays should be limited to between 350 and a maximum of 600 words. The deadline for submission of the essays to the GCBS is March 15, 2010. The winner will receive a $100 Savings Bond from the Garden City Bird Sanctuary and the student’s essay will be printed in our Newsletter, “Sump-thing Happenings” and posted on our website, www.gcbirdsanctuary.org. The family will also receive a free membership with the Garden City Bird Sanctuary for 2010 (a $35 value).
HALLOWEEN FEST & HAUNTED HIKE
Yes, we did actually have the 2009 Halloween Fest and Haunted Hikes at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary, and it was well attended. With all of the autumn rains, it was postponed twice, but finally took place and the weather cooperated. The 2010 Halloween Fest and Haunted Hikes event is scheduled for Saturday October 16th, 4-9PM so put this on your calendar now! Adelphi volunteers, GCHS’s HOPE Club, and GCBS Directors worked hard to make sure the 150 attendees had a great time with pumpkin decorating, face painting, mummy wrapping, games, crafts, a Halloween costume parade, and the spooky or not-so-spooky hikes.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CALENDAR CONTEST AND EXHIBIT
Like photography? Then we need you! The Garden City Bird Sanctuary is in the process of organizing a Group photography exhibit, called “The Calendar Show” at the Garden City Public Library during November 2010. The library exhibit will feature digital photos taken at the Bird Sanctuary. The 12 winners who are selected by jurors will have their photos in the new GCBS 2011 Photo-Calendar. The calendars will be for sale at the GCBS and Village events, including Make- A- Difference Day, Halloween Fest, Homecoming, and Winterfest. More details will be in the next newsletter, however, we will be looking for color digital images in horizontal format of at least 2,000 KB. So, start shooting now!
All seasons are needed. Contact Rob Alvey at gcbirdsanctuary@gmail for more info.

SAT JUNE 5th, 2010 GCBS 15th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
RESERVE THE DATE!!!
Yes, it‟s been 15 years since The Garden City Bird Sanctuary, Inc. was created as the volunteer group that has made “sump-thing” happen. We are celebrating this important milestone with a 15th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday June 5th . Reserve the date so you can join us for some excellent food, drinks, and entertainment at the 9-acre community nature preserve. The site will be in excellent condition and ready for you and your friends!
Tours will be provided and music, entertainment, and prizes are planned. The grass is green, many of the trees and flowers are in bloom, and there is a lot of activity in the nesting boxes. Our committee is working with many local businesses and restaurants to provide samples of food and beverages for attendees. Come on over and take a taste!
“Sump-thing” happened because of many people. Distinguished Guests of Honor include Robert McMillan, Robert Catell and Robert H. Stark, Sr. These fine people were early supporters of the Bird Sanctuary, and without their assistance, the vision of a community nature preserve would never have been realized. Trees in their honor will be dedicated. The 2010 Garden City Bird Sanctuary Environmental Stewarship Award will be presented to Jennifer Ulsheimer with Clark Memorial Gardens. Jenny has also been a long-time supporter and we have had mutually successful programs on the environment and ecology. We will also be dedicating a tree in memory of Mary Richard, former director of the Theodore Roosevelt Bird Sanctuary. Mary helped train our GCBS President on birds, managing volunteers, wildlife plantings, and helped coordinate programs of the „Birds of Prey‟ at the Bird Sanctuary. Her life was tragically cut short due to a traffic accident, but her legacy continues.
SAT APRIL 10th, 2010 ANNUAL BENEFIT YARD SALE
The Garden City Bird Sanctuary is pleased to announce their Second Annual Benefit Yard Sale to be held on Saturday, April 10th at the Sanctuary opposite 181 Tanners Pond Road. The time is from 9AM to 3PM, rain or shine (we‟re getting a tent, so don‟t worry about the weather.) The event is co-sponsored by the Garden City High School‟s Help Our Planet Earth (HOPE). Donations are now being accepted for the Sale. Please call Emily Werner, HOPE President, at 877-1164 for the east side of town and Suzie Alvey at 326-1720 for the west side of town, to drop off items or arrange for a pick-up. Donations are tax deductible. If you have a clothes rack that we can borrow for the event, please let us know!
The GCBS/HOPE Yard Sale helps raise funds to maintain the GCBS and support HOPE activities and environmental efforts. The Yard Sale will feature collectibles, toys, books, clothing, sports gear, electronics, and gardening tools, with special “dollar” tables available. Thanks are extended to Al Urban for volunteering to repeat his services as “security” help, and Jeanette Chu, Suzie Alvey, and Claire Werner for organizing. Everyone had a great time pitching in last year, and we will again be selling coffee and hot chocolate. Admission is free, and be prepared to go home with some “great stuff”.

Winterfest at Garden City Bird Sanctuary
The Second Annual Winterfest Celebration at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary brought a good number of neighbors and friends to the community nature preserve on Saturday, January 10. Hot chocolate and hot cider were certainly needed on the cold twilight, but there was a lot of warmth and good cheer as the evergreens were decorated, bird feeders filled, and listing of memorial tree recipients was read. The Board of Directors, designated 2 volunteers for special recognition: Tom Elustondo – a Garden City High School Senior who has functioned as Student Director and liaison with the High School HOPE Environmental Club; and Jeanette Chu, who volunteered so hard with the 2009 benefit yard sale and vegetable garden during the year and is now a new GCBS Director.
The Directors had Winterfest sweatshirts provided by Vice President John Cronin, and al attendees were given green bead necklaces. The event culminated with a Candle-lighting Ceremony in which the “Great Telling” was read. Just as some Native Americans have a ceremony that describes the history of their tribe, the Directors tell the story of the GCBS and Winterfest itself. Thanks to John Cronin and West Hempstead Boston Market Manager John Guzman for providing chicken, turkey, and fixin’s for a post Winterfest get-together.
