Join the Celebration!

Rob Alvey, Founder and President Emeritus of the Garden City Bird Sanctuary,  promises you that Winter will finally end and Spring is coming.  Get outside on Sunday April 6th and come help celebrate EarthFest at the community nature preserve.  The event is scheduled from 9AM to 3PM and features music, food, tours, entertainment, live animals,  displays  and talks by many of the organizations that benefit the community and environment.

Like to jog or run?  EarthFest starts off with EARTH RUN III a timed 5K on/off road run through the sanctuary, adjacent Nassau Haven Park and the quiet tree-lined streets of in the Nassau Haven area.  Earth Run has  expanded with awards to the top male and female finishers as well as under/over 30 categories.  The race is fun, and you might even see a few "angry birds" along the way.  At 11:30 there is an additional fun 1-1/2K obstacle race geared for youth.  We are associated with the Greater Long Island Runner's Club and are using Its Your Race to ensure accurate times for the dedicated runners . Come for a run and stay for the day! Morning music will be by Acoustic Dave, and a concert by the Garden City Jazz Ensemble is scheduled from 1-2PM.   Town of Hempstead Supervisor will open the event and the Mobile Stage will be on hand.  The day is to celebrate the value of volunteers to the community and the environment.  It includes displays by the Garden City Volunteer Fire Department and other groups,  an award to the 2014 6th Grade Environmental Essay Contest winner, the 2014 Garden City Bird Sanctuary Environmental Stewardship Award, and the dedication of the new Chimney Swift Towers, built by Joe Monaco as his Boy Scout Eagle project.  A new project, constructing nesting boxes for Great Horned Owls is being planned by Luke Spahn of Troop 544.

Funds raised from EarthFest are needed to be able to erect a shelter at the 9 acre sanctuary for use as a protected area during our summer children's Nature Camps and other educational programs.  The cost of the materials is about $12,000 and the labor is being donated through a Liberty Serves program by employees of Liberty Mutual Insurance.   Construction is scheduled for the week of May 5-9, and sponsors will have their names added to a plaque on the facility. Contact the GCBS at (516) 326-1720 or via email for further information.
